Exclusions in name draws: partners, family and work

With gift draws you want surprise — not having to redraw because two partners drew each other. Exclusions (also called 'blocks' or 'exceptions') solve that before the draw.

Classic exclusions that are often needed
Partners or spouses, parent–child in the same family, or two people who already agreed on a separate gift. At work sometimes: manager and direct report, or people who want to avoid conflict.
Note exclusions openly in the group so nobody is surprised by the rules.
Set them before anyone draws
Exclusions should be ready before names are drawn. If you do it afterward, the organizer must reset.
So plan: everyone joins → check exclusions → only then draw. For large families a short check round via the group chat pays off.
Too many exclusions = impossible
If almost everyone excludes everyone, the algorithm finds no valid draw. Keep it to real no-go's.
Tip: with 6+ participants a few partner exclusions are usually fine; with 3–4 participants be selective.
Keep secrets with online drawing
On paper you sometimes accidentally see a slip. Online each participant only sees their own result.
Combine exclusions with wish lists: you buy for someone 'outside your usual circle', but still something they want.
Communication prevents hassle
Say out loud: 'Couples do not draw each other' or 'Parents do not buy for their own children'. Clarity feels stricter, but prevents disappointment.
Put the rule in the group description or first invitation message too.
